THE EYES OF DARKNESS is a modest little thriller about a woman, Tina Evans, who lost her child, Danny, when he was in an accident on a trip with his scouting troop. ![]() I explained my secret life as Leigh in the afterword to the new edition of Shadowfires therefore, I will devote what space I am given here to the novel itself and to the savage, brutal, cruel, maddening, insane, inane, nonsensical, stupid, bewildering, toxic, blood-curddling, lip-chafing, toenail-curling experience of working with a major television network to adapt the novel, and three others, as part of a program that would have been called “The Dean Koontz Theater” or “Dean Koontz Presents” or possibly “Here’s Dean!” or even “Koontzapalooza.” The producer, the studio, and the network never could agree on a title, and no one liked my idea– “Kickass Koontz Cinema”–and probably even realized I was not serious in proposing it. THE EYES OF DARKNESS was the second book I wrote under the pen name Leigh Nichols. ![]()

Regardless of whether a private, for-profit entity like Nevada Lithium is acting with the best of intentions, any attempt to dig lithium out of the ground is likely to make a mess. ![]() And yet it poses plenty of its own risks: according to the EPA, waste tailings from the mine could leave traces of uranium, mercury, and arsenic in the local watershed, where they’d linger for the next three centuries. Supporters of the mine say it could produce up to 66,000 tons per year of lithium carbonate, a component in rechargeable batteries, which car and truck manufacturers can use to build millions of solar-powered and electric cars over the next five decades, buttressing an essential component of President Biden’s plan to reverse the progress of climate change. ![]() ![]() Thacker Pass, near the Oregon border, is home to the largest deposit of lithium in the United States. At the end of March, the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone tribal council voted to cancel a preliminary agreement with the resource company Lithium Nevada to explore installing an open-pit mine near the reservation. ![]() ![]() With several broken bones and a shattered face, Dini experienced an arduous recovery process, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television, including the Joker, Harley Quinn, and the Penguin.
